Talk During a Massage?

Many clients wonder if they should talk during their massage. The answer is it’s totally up to you.

Here are some things to think about:

  • At the beginning of a massage treatment, it is beneficial to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. This will help put you in a relaxed frame of mind so you get the most out of the experience.
  • Some people want to use their treatment time to meditate and forget about their worries. Some people even fall asleep during a massage, which is a huge compliment. Never feel pressure to talk or chat. This is your time and my job is to make sure you leave feeling great.
  • Some people like to use the time to connect and talking is a way of relaxing for them. If this is you, wonderful. I love getting to know my clients.
  • Certain types of massage, such as deep tissue massage and sports massage, require more feedback because I’m working on deeper layers of muscle and will want to ensure that the pressure is not uncomfortable. Sometimes clients feel like they will be insulting me if they speak up. However, that is never the case. I want to know if it is too intense.

Want to talk during your massage? That's perfectly fine, too!

I take my cues from the client. I will generally start a session asking about how your body is feeling today and if you’re under any unusual stress. A short answer usually means that you aren’t wanting to talk during your massage. A longer answer usually leads to follow up conversation. It’s completely up to you!
